The council of Alcochete stands out for the diversity of its territory. Situated on the left bank of the estuary of Tejo, the biggest estuary of Western Europe and one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in Europe, the council of Alcochete has a unique status in the field of conservation of nature and biodiversity in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML), due to its salt mines and extensive dehesa areas.
