Background:
Started in 1997 and finished in 1999. Adapted to the new legislation in 2001 and published in Diário da República on 8 of Maio 2002.

Zona dos Mármores composes the Councils of Estremoz, Borba, Vila Viçosa and Alandroal and covers a specific area where certain situations can occur, and requires quick territorial planning decisions:

• On the one hand, the extraction process on the deposits of marble has consequences in the economic structure and a significative impact on the environment and landscape;

• On the other hand, there are activities related in the sector of marbles, especially the agri-business, but also in the small industrial, civil construction, commercial and service change.
